Quick facts
- Light: Bright indirect · Water: When top 1-2 inches dry
- Difficulty: Easy-moderate
- Pet-safe: No
Description
A bold indoor tree with thick, glossy, oval leaves that may be dark green, burgundy, or variegated. New leaves emerge from a pointed sheath, then unfurl into a leathery blade.
Care
- Light: Bright indirect is best. Variegated forms need more light than dark-leaved forms.
- Water: Let the top 1-2 inches dry, then water thoroughly and drain.
- Soil & potting: Well-draining mix; avoid oversized pots that stay wet.
- Humidity & temperature: Average humidity is fine; avoid cold drafts.
- Feeding: Feed lightly spring-summer.
- Repotting / propagation: Repot when rootbound; rotate for even growth.
Propagation
From stem cuttings or air layering. Cuttings need at least one node and warm, humid conditions. Wear gloves or wash hands because the milky sap can irritate skin. See Propagation Basics.
Toxicity
Not pet-safe. The milky Ficus sap can irritate the mouth, stomach, and skin. Keep away from pets that chew leaves.
