Description
A bold Southern California penstemon with tall flower stalks packed with wide-mouthed violet to purple-blue tubular flowers. It is one of the showier spring scrub perennials and is easy to spot when whole slopes start blooming.
Wildlife & pollinators
Excellent for hummingbirds and native bees. It helps bridge the gap between winter annual bloom and hotter summer drought.
Habitat & range
Open scrub, dry slopes, and foothill canyons in Southern California, especially in the Transverse and Peninsular ranges.
In the garden
One of the easier native penstemons for dry gardens. It tolerates a range of soils, including some clay, as long as drainage is decent and summer irrigation stays light.
Propagation
From seed or cuttings. Let a few stems ripen seed if you want natural reseeding.
Where to see it near you
- iNaturalist — observed in Southern California
- Open scrubby slopes, canyon edges, and sunny foothill habitat.
Problems
Usually short-lived if overwatered or crowded by heavier perennials. Cut back old stalks after bloom if you want a tidier look.
