Description

A clean, upright penstemon with tubular scarlet to orange-red flowers spaced along tall stems. The flowers are built for hummingbirds, and the plant often looks like a red signal flare on dry mountain slopes.

Wildlife & pollinators

Excellent hummingbird plant. Native bees may also visit, but the long red tubes are the main clue: this is a bird flower.

Habitat & range

Open chaparral, dry montane slopes, rocky roadsides, and post-fire openings. It is common across Southern California mountains and foothills.

In the garden

Great for dry pollinator gardens where hummingbird plants are wanted without summer irrigation. Give it drainage, sun, and companions that do not smother it.

Propagation

From seed or basal cuttings. Fall sowing is usually best; seedlings need open soil and good light.

Problems

Short-lived if overwatered. Watch for Root Rot in heavy soils.
