Description
A ribbed barrel cactus armored with heavy curved spines, often leaning slightly with age. Flowers appear in a ring near the top, followed by yellowish fruits that can persist.
Wildlife & pollinators
Flowers feed native bees and other insects; fruit and shelter are used by desert wildlife.
Habitat & range
Rocky desert slopes, alluvial fans, washes, and bajadas across the Mojave and Sonoran deserts.
In the garden
Excellent for hot desert gardens and containers with mineral soil. Needs full sun, excellent drainage, and restraint with water.
Propagation
Grow from seed in warm, fast-draining cactus mix. Slow but dependable with patience.
