Description

A big, fountain-like native bunchgrass forming a dense clump of fine green leaves, with tall, narrow, spike-like flowering stems that rise stiffly above the mound and bleach to tan. Tough, long-lived, and architectural — a backbone grass for restoration and gardens, and a traditional basketry material for California tribes.

Habitat & range

Dry slopes, meadow edges, seeps, and the upper edges of riparian areas through cismontane California.

In the garden

A reliable evergreen-ish structural grass — mass it, line a path, or use single specimens. Full sun, low water; comb or cut back every year or two to refresh. Pairs well with wildflowers and sages.

Propagation

Easy by division and from seed.

Problems

Essentially trouble-free; just needs an occasional cleanup.
