Description
A tall tule/bulrush of marshes and pond edges, with round green stems rising from shallow water or saturated mud. The brown flower clusters emerge near the stem tips while the stem continues above them.
Wildlife & pollinators
High habitat value: nesting structure and cover for marsh birds, perches for dragonflies, shade for amphibians, and dense refuge along water edges.
Habitat & range
Fresh to brackish marshes, pond margins, slow creek edges, treatment wetlands, and tule marsh habitat throughout Southern California.
In the garden
Excellent for large ponds, constructed wetlands, and restoration basins. Too large and spreading for small water features unless contained.
Propagation
By division, rhizome pieces, plugs, or seed. Divisions establish quickly in saturated soil or shallow water.
