Description
A deceptively fuzzy-looking cholla with dense golden spines and easily detached joints. The “teddybear” look is visual only; this is one of the most painful desert plants to brush against.
Wildlife & pollinators
Flowers feed native bees, and the spiny structure provides cover for desert wildlife.
Habitat & range
Mojave and Colorado Desert slopes, flats, washes, and cactus scrub.
In the garden
Only for large desert cactus gardens where it can be placed far from people, pets, paths, and hoses.
Propagation
From stem joints that detach and root. Handle with tools, never bare hands.

Problems
Spines detach easily and are difficult to remove. Keep well away from foot traffic.
