Lake Tahoe — the basin rim

The great alpine lake straddling the California–Nevada line, ringed by granite peaks and one of the most accessible slices of high Sierra forest anywhere. Walk uphill from the shore and you climb through mixed-conifer forest (Jeffrey pine, sugar pine, white fir, incense cedar) into the cold, snowy red-fir belt, and finally into subalpine forest and open granite near treeline. Aspen groves gold up the creek canyons in October, wet meadows fill with monkeyflower and shooting star in July, and the drier east and north shores grade into sagebrush.
